Paddy Farmer

Chellammal

The river gives the water, the land gives the grain, and we give our backs. Nothing here comes without all three.

Along the Tamirabarani, Chellammal works the paddy fields that have fed Tirunelveli for centuries. The rice she raises finds its way into the flours and bases of many traditional sweets and savouris.

She is out before sunrise, ankle-deep in the cool mud, transplanting seedlings in straight green rows. By harvest, those rows become the golden grain that the whole village depends on.

Farming the old way is harder and slower, but Chellammal refuses to abandon it. She keeps to seasonal rhythms and traditional varieties, convinced that what is grown with care simply tastes truer.

"People forget that a sweet begins in a field, not a kitchen," she says. For her, every grain carries the same quiet promise of honesty that the brand was built on.
